I'd like to have a go at this... if the creator does not mind that is. ;) If there are any details bothering you, please contact me and I'll hopefully fix them on time. Completed.Name:
Barty Lithowitz Age:
Mer Type Two (humanoid with Mer blood)Type One:
Show dominance of Mer blood, with features that includes a scaly complexion, protruding gills and an incredibly angular face that creates the "empty fish" appearance. Their human-features are barely present as the slimy-like skin and lack of hair makes them definitely fish-like. Type Ones usually die unless in constant contact with water, making them bound to the sea or any body of water that isn't contaminated. They are often considered rejects, but only because the Mer beauty is more prominent in this type.Type Two:
Human features are dominant over Mer-features, and gills work as a secondary set of breathing organs that remain in stasis unless triggered by water. Unless you look closely at the suppressed features, you won't be able to tell the difference. Such features would be sleek/fine body/head hair, larger pupils and irises, slits on the neck, and webbed feet. This type of mixed Mer is considered hideous in the Mer race, and those borne as a Type Two are often abandoned. Type Twos are more common, especially when more human blood is mixed with the Mer, and a mark appears on Type Twos when the Mer blood becomes stronger. The mark itself appears on a visible place, like a brand of sort, and is original per person. Appearance:
Barty stands at the midline height of 5'6," her body built with streamline-like qualities. With a long neck, thin frame (bust also small due to Mer-qualities), and piano-like fingers, she appears delicate. Her hair is short, black, and sleek, controlled with a waterproof wax, while her eyes are a deeper than notable blue, almost blending with the black of her pupils. With a naturally dark complexion she blends in with the Victorian world's darker features, and is perfectly capable of remaining unseen in the night.
She wears the clothes of a newspaper boy. Barty dresses in a crisp but weathered collared long sleeved shirt, fitted dark-gray waistcoat (aka vest), and black/brown pair of trousers worn like so
, held up by a pair of bracers (aka suspenders). Adorned on her legs and feet are fine-threaded black socks, and a pair of worn but comfortably broken in shoes.
She wears a breathable choker that her mother gifted Barty on her 16th birthday, which cleanly hides the gill slits. Made of a special material that belongs to the Mer, and does not hinder her second set of nostrils at all.Aims:
Her current aim is to enjoy the little she has, make ends meet with her natural talents and knacks, and find out the truth of Myriat and Merchurdon in the midst of the Imperium's takeover. Alignment:
She belongs to the working class, and is a Messenger/Paperboy for her father's printing press the Peeping Eye. Personality:
Barty's a smiler, often found laughing when people become baffled by her odd sounding name, cheerfully smirking with mischief in her gleaming eyes. Despite her thin body and delicate features, she's the type to crave for fun, fantastical action, and the ability to show everyone what she's got. An exhibitionist with a sense of class, she knows when to perform, when to back out, and when to blend into the shadows. Often times her outspoken attitude and body language leave people believing her to be boyish, and she won't deny that either.
She's a people person, and loves to talk, socialize, and charm her fellow citizens with her way of words. A charismatic young woman whose charms can soften the most tightly bound, she's in her element when in the crowd. Due to her outspokenness, she often invites trouble without thinking of it. However, she does not mind that, because it's in her nature to cause some mild trouble.
Often times she has a "knack" of knowing things (due to her occupation and family occupation), and has the curiosity necessary to look for the truth. Growing up in a family and work setting that always searched and questioned, she has the innate drive of wanting to know. And that is what Barty is: street smart, people smart, and intuitively on top.Weapons/equipment:
The following are her weapons/equipment: 1) Webbed leather gloves:
Meant to mimic the webbed-qualities of her feet, she has these not only to protect her hands, but to enable total control in the water. Not only that, but they're padded in the right areas, so if she wants to swing a hook, she can without having to worry too much about it hurting. Unless it's to a wall. Then she should. 2) Messenger Bag:
It holds her essentials, work items, and has a water bag made of hardy material. It hooks itself in with manual clasps, and can be cleaned, the nozzle of the water bag accessible even while attached to the bag. Its strap and build makes it so that it remains secure on her body while on deliveries, and makes the load easier to carry. 3) Communication Ring:
One piece of a set of two that both her mother and father possessed. A symbolic set that symbolized eternal wedding ties, it was a means of always being together even when apart. It's an artifact set that her mother had from her estranged family, that of which she kept close. Due to her mother's death, Barty's father gave the ring to his daughter, as a means for them both to stay close and in touch. Barty keeps it as a physical keepsake of her mother, hung around her neck and hidden beneath her clothes. 4) Second-eyelids:
They're actually a part of her biological make-up, but considered a piece of equipment on her body. They work like goggles, enabling her to see clearly in the water with its mucous layer, and are barely visible beneath the first set of eyelids she has. 5) Gill-slits:
She has two sets of these on her neck, both of which are hidden by the collar of her shirt. Acting like a second breathing organ, they are closed while above water. When submerged, all she needs to do is keep her mouth sealed, and breathe through this second set of nostrils. However, she needs to consciously keep them closed. Otherwise, she can suffocate above water.6) Webbed feet:
Like a pair of flippers they enable her to move at incredible speeds beneath the water, and are made of sturdy folds of skin and softer bones. Powers/magic: 1) Adept underwater combatant/acrobat/swimmer:
Her body is and meant to be in water, and once she's underwater, it's her playground. With her webbed feet and her gills, her ability to fight and move in the water is phenomenal. However, if the water she swims in is too contaminated, or is too hot or cold, her body may be unable to take the conditions, and could even be fatal. 2) Mer-Water:
This is the ability of the Mer, and any who possess strong traces of Mer blood. Barty can control certain quantities of water, as long as it's mostly clean, and drinkable. If the contents of the water are too polluted with alien material, she cannot control it unless she "filters" it (a process that takes too much time and effort for her to consider unless it is a last option). The larger the quantity of water, the more it takes to wield it. She tries to not test her limits, knowing that it's physically taxing, and tends to use this ability as a mere parlor trick to earn a few coins.
When on the run, she uses this as means of self-defense, hurling water at the eyes of her opponents, or down their throats to make them go into coughing fits. Even as a distraction.
This power unfortunately does not work as a healing factor, as there are too many alien components in a body to be able to properly control them. The only way she'd be capable of such ability would be to enact and empower the Mer blood in her veins. And that is something she cannot do. At least, not on her own.3) Mer-Song: This is an ability that her mother possessed, which worked as a form of hypnosis towards any "attracted" to the singer. However, Barty does not have the active form of this ability. This power is passive, and works with Barty's already present charisma and people-friendly attitude, capable of drawing attention from crowds of passersby. This is especially more prevalent when laughing and positively influential. History:
She is a second-generation Mer humanoid, borne in the love and care of the Lithowitz family, her father a human, the mother Half-Mer. Her father Adam is a Printer, who owns a popular printing press that produces the Peering Eye, a currents events newspaper that often questions certain parties of powers through the opinions of their journalists and writers. Her mother Ar is Half-Mer, whose features make her incredibly alien, but incredibly gorgeous, with fair glistening skin and warm black eyes. Before she became a homebody, Ar was a performing singer whose voice could be heard from the water, who sang tales of the Mer, an enigmatic race in the world of Myriat. However, Ar rarely performs, especially after giving birth to one healthy Barty, a delivery that did more than enough to make the Half-Mer weak.
Barty seemed mostly human, built solid and like her father, making her parents believe her to be mostly human (bringing some relief to her mother). Her childhood was mostly uneventful, not aware at all about the corruption and dark things that were happening. Such is the innocence of youth, but things changed upon puberty. The Mer blood suddenly spiked on the first full moon of her 16th year, and she went through the slow process of inheriting her Mer features. Her eyes grew strange, her hair thinned, and her body slowly shrank, grew, and strengthened in odd ways. One day as she bathed she submerged in the water, and didn't realize until two minutes being beneath the water that she was breathing. Through a newly opened set of gills. In panic she screamed, causing her parents to barge in (her mother then escorting her baffled father in the midst of their now crying/blushing daughter).
Thankfully, things were explained, and Barty's confusion of the changes were settled. Whatever physical changes were blamed on puberty, and whatever physical changes Barty was able to hide with clothing. During her later adolescent years, she and her father lost mother Ar to Mer-Fire (aka a severe fever), a rare and fatalistic condition to anyone with Mer blood. Deterred by her mother's death, and considerate of her father's loss, Barty went through school, and then began to work under her father by delivering his important documents and papers to and from clients. Soon enough her clientele grew, and she acquired a well-earned reputation of being one of the most reliable Messengers in the vicinity. Due to the constant exposure to society, as well as her father's influence, she's savvy about events, happenstances and rumors around the city and worldly events.
Though due to recent events, especially with the rise of the Imperium, she's begun wonder about her father, especially as opinions against the Imperium grew stronger and stronger in the written pieces in recent editions. Controversy and tension started to build up in the staff of the Peering Eye during this year, and when Barty gets the bad feeling, it only can be a bad sign. ’Previous life’ History:
Barty was always Barty, only her life was full of distraught. With a family that was torn apart by the community's bad inter-gang activity, she was an active journalist and unofficial investigator/meddler. Her original intent was to find ways to understand the situation, and to give said information to the authorities to slowly filter out the bad stuff that caused trouble to the neighborhoods and families affected. Her commitment has led to successful drug raids and infiltration, and betterment of her family's altogether safety.
Every day was a risk, but the scoop was worth the trouble.
But while on the job, on an odder day, she felt something... strange in her gut. As if something bad was going to happen. Something... wrong. It was unexplainable, and yet, it was something that unsettled her. Little did she know a gang war would re-trigger the violence once calmed down, and had she not taken the Stranger's hand, she would have been caught in the crossfire.
